How to Measure Eyebrow Arches
Once again, the arch rests on top of the blind so there are three ways arches are found in homes. The three types of mounts are:
1. Extended Arch Window-Eyebrow
Step 1: Determine blind and arch starting height at mutually agreed to point of window opening. It is best to let the homeowner know where the top of the blind starts. Blind may follow existing horizontal mullion or be at any designated dogleg height between 5" and 17". A general rule of design follows the proportion of one quarter to one fifth of the width is the dogleg height.
Step 2: Measure blind WIDTH and blind LENGTH.
Step 3: Measure arch WIDTH and arch CENTER HEIGHT.
Step 4: Measure arch DOGLEG LEFT and DOGLEG RIGHT.
Step 5: Make sure blind length and arch height = TOTAL height of window.
Note: Factory adds 1 3/8" offset around sides and top of arch to allow arch to overlap the window opening. For example: window width = 34", actual arch width = 35 3/4".
Window arch center height = 11", actual arch center height = 12 3/4".
2. Stand Alone Eyebrow Arch Window with Sill
Arch rests directly on sill and a standard valance covers mounting holes.
Note: We cannot use a 3 1/2" decorative valance because the bottom of the arch frame is only 2 3/4". Therefore a standard 2 1/2" valance is required.
3. Stand Alone Eyebrow Arch Window with No Sill
Arch rests directly on bottom of arch sheet rock ledge so a valance is required to cover any light gaps.
GENERAL COMMENTS
OLD THINKING: Nothing fits into eyebrow windows except an expensive shutter or and impossible to install honeycomb shade. And for sure I need an accurate template.
NEW THINKING: Arch has 1 3/8" offset on all sides to allow irregular shaped eyebrow windows to be covered easily. Once again, arch mounts on top of the blind.
No template needed except when there are no distinct radius corners on the doglegs.
Arches mount outside the edge of the wall and project into to room 5/8" and into the window 5/8" plus the width of the 2" slat when fully open.
Make sure there is no wood trim around the arch opening and that you have a minimum of 2" from any obstruction.
